Honestly, this post will probably be a bit of word vomit but it’s something I’ve been sitting on for a while.
I’ve volunteered a lot over the years, but a few months ago I began volunteering on a regular basis for KC Pet Project (a large pet rescue, clinic, and animal services provider). And even though it’s emotional to see the homeless pets, it’s been so overwhelmingly good for me.
As someone who desperately needs to feel productive and like I’m doing something good for the world, it’s a wonder it took me so long to commit to volunteering regularly. I always came up with excuses for why I couldn’t set aside the time, but I’m so glad I finally made the plunge because I’m better for it.
Here’s the thing. Obviously volunteering is a good thing to do for your community, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t doing it somewhat selfishly. I truly leave each shift feeling better than I did before, even if I’m exhausted and sweaty and covered in miscellaneous dog fluids (you get used to it).
Whether it’s cleaning kennels, refilling water, chopping up hot dogs, or taking dogs on walks, I can immediately see the impact of my efforts. The staff at KC Pet Project work incredibly hard each day to literally save lives, and they are so grateful for any bit of help they get. So even if I’m just washing dishes, it’s allowing their efforts to continue helping pets.
Every act of service is like a shot of dopamine. Plus, just look at these sweet babies I get to help! I even got to teach Mason (on the far right) how to shake!

Long story short, if you’ve been considering volunteering for a local organization, do it. Now more than ever, organizations are understaffed and under-resourced and will greatly benefit from your willingness to help.
Happy volunteering!
